New offices set to benefit from pluggable metering and lighting control solutions

New offices benefit from pluggable metering and lighting control solutions

The management and staff at consultant engineering firm, BSD have benefitted from a range of solutions from leading energy distribution manufacturer, Hager.

The building’s overall design aims to showcase Germany’s ‘Passivhaus’ design and build standard based upon the latest energy efficiency standards in terms of a building’s thermal performance, exceptional airtightness and mechanical ventilation.

To enable energy and operational efficiencies to be maximised, the building designers have specified Hager’s new pluggable distribution board and metering solutions, along with Hager’s Klik 7 Pin lighting control system.

These solutions have proven to be cost effective and straightforward to install for the site contractors, and will enable management to closely monitor the building’s energy consumption to help optimise energy usage.

Matthew Chadwick, electrical engineer for BSD, comments: “As a business that seeks to work with clients to construct highly effective and energy efficient buildings, it is important that our new company headquarters demonstrates what is possible. Meeting the Passivhaus standard for energy efficient construction means we will have an excellent example to show our clients.

“An important part of the overall solution has been the specification and installation of Hager’s products. We have found the company’s technology to be reliable and cost effective when we have used it on other projects. At our new headquarters, the information provided by the distribution board’s meter will provide the data we require to continually optimise the energy performance of our building, and meet the important legislative requirements of Building Regulations Part L and TM39 Building Energy Metering compliance.”

In addition to the metering solutions, the new building also incorporates Hager’s pluggable Klik 7 Pin lighting connection and control system. This offers a unique modular plug and socket interface to provide a simultaneous mechanical and electrical connection in one easy click-in action.

To aid ongoing efficiency objectives, the lighting control system will provide, among other benefits, automatic presence detection in rooms and daylight saving capabilities across the entire 500m2 office environment. This will enable BSD to save energy and reduce costs, while lowering carbon emissions.

Matthew Chadwick says: “The Klik 7 Pin pluggable lighting control system made the installation quick and easy for the contracting team, which has saved us both time and cost. We look forward to using the controls to deliver real operational and environmental benefits as we optimise the use of lighting across the building.”

Brendan Donohue, Commercial Specification and Key Account Manager from Hager, comments: “BSD’s new building is a prime example of where intelligence-based metering and lighting control solutions can have a big impact when it comes to reducing energy consumption, without compromising the building occupants’ working conditions.

The company wanted to create premises that would be a strong example of today’s greener construction methods. Not only has it achieved this, but together with the specification of Hager’s pluggable distribution board with metering capabilities, and the Klik 7 Pin lighting control system, it is set up for a low energy future and is a working example of a highly energy efficient building that they can demonstrate to their clients going forward.”
