BEAMA Guide to Surge Protection Devices (SPDs): selection, application and theory
Think lightning never strikes twice – think again!
Electronic systems pervade almost every aspect of our lives, from the work environment through to visiting the local supermarket, and as a society we are heavily reliant on the continuous and efficient running of such systems. When you consider that lightning flashes release many hundreds of mega-joules of energy, compared to the milli-joules of energy that may be sufficient to cause damage to sensitive electronic equipment in electrical and electronic systems within a structure, it is clear the case for surge protection is compelling.
Misconceptions about lightning and the need for surge protection
Surge protection doesn’t just protect against direct lightning strikes. Computers and other electronic equipment can be affected by lightning strikes as much as 1 km away, and therefore need to be protected from damage.
Even if equipment is in a building with structural lightning protection, it is still very much at risk - structural protection is designed to prevent damage to the building and loss of life, not to prevent damage to equipment.
In contrast a transient overvoltage transmitted through the system which has been created by switching or operation of machinery will cause problems as stated in BS7671 7671 “Transient overvoltage’s transmitted by the supply distribution system are not significantly attenuated downstream in most installations” this can mean that equipment is not protected if these events are not taken into account by providing the correct levels of protection.
Installing the correct surge protection system costs a fraction of the cost of damage and the impact of downtime on a business.

To help designers, specifiers and installers better understand the requirements relating to surge protection standards BEAMA has published its’ Guide to Surge Protection Devices’ which provides clear, best practice guidance to: understand the types of risk and damage that can occur; enable them to comply with surge protection requirements in Wiring Requirements BS 7671; and assist those involved in selecting, erecting and testing, and verification of surge protection devices in accordance with BS 7671, supported by current lightning and surge protection standards.
